A phrase is buried in the rock. You never see it — only the one letter currently exposed.
It comes out one letter at a time, in order. The yard below holds exactly that phrase's letters, stacked — and only the bottom block of a column can be taken.
Take the exposed letter and it comes free. Take any other and it waits in the rack until its turn — that is a park, and you only get so many. The rack holds four. Fill all four and the next block that has to wait has nowhere to go — that is the end of the dig.
The way in
The clue is there from the first tap, and every letter you free is another square of the phrase. Work out what it says and you know every letter still to come — the digging stops being a guess and becomes arithmetic.
Par is the fewest blocks anyone could park and still clear the rock — the number a perfect line would manage. You cannot beat it; matching it is the thing. Every park above it eats into your shoring.
Get it wrong and you can start again as often as you like — the phrase stays buried. Give up and you'll see it, but that's the day done and the streak with it.
